First Reserve Corporation Announces Nine Senior Promotions

Greenwich, CT, Houston, TX, Hong Kong and London, January 5, 2012 — First Reserve Corporation, a premier global private investment firm with a single focus in the energy and natural resource industries, has promoted nine senior team members in a move which reflects the deep bench of talent at the firm.

Effective January 1, 2012 Michael France, Francesco Giuliani, Neil Hartley, John Mogford and Joshua Weiner are Managing Directors of the firm. At the same time, Gary Reaves, Ryan Shockley and Ryan Zafereo became Directors and Matthew Raben, was promoted to Director, Legal.

Full biographies are outlined below:

Michael G. France, Managing Director, joined First Reserve in 2007 and is based in Houston, TX. His responsibilities range from deal origination and structuring to due diligence, execution and monitoring, with particular focus on the reserves and midstream sectors.  Prior to joining First Reserve, Mr. France was a Vice President in the Natural Resources Group, Investment Banking Division, at Lehman Brothers. Prior to Lehman Brothers, he was a Senior Consultant at Deloitte & Touche. Mr. France holds a B.B.A. in Finance from the University of Texas and an M.B.A. from Jones Graduate School of Management at Rice University.

Francesco Giuliani, Managing Director, joined First Reserve in 2006 and is based in London. His responsibilities include investment origination, structuring, execution, monitoring and exit strategy, with particular emphasis on power and equipment, manufacturing, and services sectors. Prior to joining First Reserve, Mr. Giuliani was a Senior Executive with General Electric. Most recently, he led the GE Oil & Gas Equipment Business at Nuovo Pignone, a $2.5 billion operation in Florence, Italy. Prior to that time he was head of the Honeywell integration effort for GE Energy and spent several years in corporate development at different GE businesses and at Finmeccanica in Rome. Mr. Giuliani holds a degree in Management and Business Administration from the Libera Università Internazionale in Rome.

Neil J. Hartley, Managing Director, joined First Reserve in 2006 and is based in London. His responsibilities include investment origination, structuring, execution, monitoring and exit strategy, with particular emphasis on the energy equipment, manufacturing and services sector. Prior to joining First Reserve, Mr. Hartley spent six years in Investment Banking with Simmons & Company International, most recently as a Director, where he focused on corporate finance advisory work in the energy sector. Prior to joining Simmons & Company, he was a Management Consultant at McKinsey & Company, Inc. He also spent seven years with Schlumberger, most recently as a Field Service Manager and Field Engineer. Mr. Hartley holds an M.A. degree in Engineering, Economics, and Management from Worcester College, University of Oxford and an M.B.A from Harvard Business School.

John Mogford, Managing Director, joined First Reserve as Operating Partner in 2009 and is based in London.  He provides direct operational support and guidance to First Reserve’s portfolio company executives as well as strategic advice to First Reserve investment teams. Prior to joining First Reserve, Mr. Mogford spent 32 years at BP, mainly in upstream, most recently as the Executive Vice President for Refining. He served as one of 10 members of BP’s Executive Committee. Mr. Mogford received a B.Eng. from Sheffield University and business qualifications from INSEAD and Stanford Universities.

Joshua R. Weiner, Managing Director, joined First Reserve in 2006 and is based in Greenwich, CT. Mr. Weiner helps direct First Reserve’s capital markets activities both in existing portfolio companies and with regard to new acquisitions. Prior to joining First Reserve, Mr. Weiner was an Associate in the Capital Markets Group at Warburg Pincus LLC. Prior to that, he was an Associate with Morgan Stanley in the Global Capital Markets and Global Leveraged Finance groups. Mr. Weiner holds a B.A. degree Magna Cum Laude in History and German from Bowdoin College.

Matthew S. Raben, Director, Legal, joined First Reserve in 2006 and is based in Greenwich, CT. His responsibilities include investment structuring, due diligence review, negotiation of deal documentation and advising on legal issues of First Reserve Funds. Prior to joining First Reserve, Mr. Raben was a Corporate Associate with Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP. Prior to joining Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, he was a Senior Analyst with Cornerstone Research, as well as a Financial Analyst with Smith Barney. Mr. Raben holds a B.A. in History from Dartmouth College and a J.D. from Stanford Law School.

Gary D. Reaves, Director, joined First Reserve in 2006 and is based in Houston, TX. His responsibilities range from deal origination and structuring to due diligence, execution and monitoring, with particular focus on midstream assets and the equipment, manufacturing and services sectors. Prior to joining First Reserve, he was an Analyst in the Global Energy Group at UBS Investment Bank. He also spent time as an Analyst in Financial Advisory Services for Howard Frazier Barker Elliott, Inc. Mr. Reaves holds a B.B.A. in International Business from the University of Texas.

Ryan A. Shockley, Director, joined First Reserve in 2004 as an Associate and returned to First Reserve as a Vice President in 2008 after earning his M.B.A. He is based in Greenwich, CT. His responsibilities range from deal origination and structuring to due diligence, execution and monitoring, with particular focus on power, and equipment, manufacturing and services sectors. Prior to joining First Reserve as an Associate, Mr. Shockley was an Analyst at J.P. Morgan Securities in its Financial Sponsors Group. Mr. Shockley holds a B.A. in Economics from Kalamazoo College and an M.B.A from Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

Ryan N. Zafereo, Director, joined First Reserve in 2005 and is based in London. His responsibilities range from deal origination and structuring to due diligence, execution and monitoring, with a particular emphasis on the natural resources industry and energy-related insurance businesses. Prior to joining First Reserve, he was an Investment Banking Analyst for Simmons & Company International, a premier investment banking firm specializing in the energy services market. He also spent time as a Private Wealth Management Analyst for Goldman, Sachs & Co. Mr. Zafereo holds a B.B.A. in Finance from the University of Texas.
